Calcium Level in Broiler and Layer Feed

Correct Answer: 1% & 3–3.5%

As per BIS 2007 standards:

• Broiler feed: Calcium minimum = 1% (for all phases: prestarter, starter, finisher)
• Layer feed: Calcium minimum = 3.0% (Phase I) to 3.5% (Phase II)

Why Layers Need Much More Calcium

• The eggshell is composed of 96% inorganic matter, of which 94% is calcium carbonate (CaCO₃).
• Each egg shell contains approximately 2 g of calcium.
• A laying hen producing 300 eggs/year needs a continuous supply of calcium for shell formation.
• Calcium deficiency in layers causes soft-shelled eggs and osteoporosis (cage layer fatigue).
