The cloaca is a single common chamber that connects to — and serves as the common exit for — the digestive, urinary, and reproductive tracts in poultry. It opens to the outside through the vent.

Structure of Cloaca

• Coprodeum: receives faeces from the large intestine.
• Urodeum: receives urine from the ureters and eggs/sperm from the reproductive tract.
• Proctodeum: the final chamber before the vent; also contains the Bursa of Fabricius (a lymphoid organ important for B-cell maturation in young birds).

Clinical Importance

• The cloaca is used in the vent sexing (Japanese method) of day-old chicks to differentiate males from females by examining the genital eminence.
• Cloacal prolapse (tissue protruding from the vent) can trigger cannibalism in flocks — managed using red light which reduces visibility of red-coloured wounds.
